The Michigan Rugby Referee Society is a community of trained and dedicated officials committed to serving the game of rugby across the state. Our members officiate matches at all levels—from youth and high school to collegiate and senior club—bringing consistency, integrity, and a deep understanding of the laws of the game. We support one another through ongoing education, mentorship, and a shared passion for rugby.

HOW DO I BECOME A CERTIFIED YOUTH RUGBY REFEREE?
You must complete the World Rugby Level 1 Officiating course and register with USA Rugby's Learning Center to begin your certification process. Local workshops are held throughout Michigan during the off-season.
WHAT GEAR IS REQUIRED FOR MATCH DAYS?
Referees should have a high-pitched whistle, yellow and red cards, a scorebook, and appropriate athletic footwear. Match jerseys are often provided by the Michigan Rugby Referees Society for sanctioned events.
ARE THERE MENTORSHIP PROGRAMS FOR NEW OFFICIALS?
Yes, Michigan Youth Rugby pairs new officials with experienced mentors to provide on-field guidance and post-match reviews. This program ensures a smooth transition from training to active officiating.
HOW ARE MATCH ASSIGNMENTS HANDLED?
Assignments are managed through our central portal based on your recorded availability, certification level, and geographic location. We strive to match referees with games that suit their experience level.
